guimarães historical centre is related to a response in the portuguese national identity crises during the 12th century. it is a well preserved example of the evolution of a medieval locality into a modern city, with a rich construction typology showing the portuguese architectural development between the 15th and 19th centuries with its continued use of traditional processes and construction techniques.
